How Lagoon Loyal Works
Simple actions lead to valuable rewards.
Do you live in Brevard County, want the health of the Indian River Lagoon to improve, but aren't sure how to help? The good news is there are simple actions you can take in your very own yard to help heal the lagoon.

The majority of Brevard County is part of the Indian River Lagoon watershed. Most of the land, drainage ditches, canals and tributaries can drain into the lagoon, delivering thousands of pounds of algae-feeding nutrients from stormwater along with it. So, whether you live miles away, your home could still impact the lagoon.

Take Simple Actions Each Day to Protect the Lagoon.

Blow Grass clippings back into the lawn.
When grass clippings are left in the street, rain can wash them into stormdrains and the lagoon, contributing to the accumulation of muck. Keep grass off streets and away from water.

Adjust sprinklers before rain.
Excess irrigation leads to water runoff, which can introduce harmful pollutants into the lagoon. Commit to these water-saving tips to help the lagoon.

Pick up after your pet.
When pet waste is left on the ground, harmful bacteria can enter the lagoon through stormdrains and ditches. Make it your business to pick up your pet’s business.

Wash your car over your lawn.
Your lawn acts like a filter to keep harmful suds and dirt off the street and out of the lagoon. Reduce vehicle pollution to help save the lagoon.

Put trash in its place.
Litter left on roadways can be carried to stormdrains and into the lagoon – impacting our wildlife and our wallets. Help keep Brevard (and the lagoon) beautiful.

Know when to fertilize.
Honor the fertilizer ban during our rainy season: Jun 1 – Sep 30. Heavy rains can flush fertilizer off your grass and into the lagoon. Adopt these lawn care tips to keep our lagoon clean.

Schedule a Septic Inspection.
Malfunctioning septic systems can reduce your property value, create health concerns and harm lagoon aquatic life. Follow these simple tips to maintain your system.
